Ultra Rare Idd Ri 1840S Military Formal Dress UniformUltra rare id'd ri 1840's military formal dress uniform. Offered here is a truly amazing piece of history. This complete uniform grouping came directly from the estate of elisha dyer, where is has remained stored and untouched for the better part of 150 years. Elisha dyer of rhode island was the r. Adjudant general from 1840-1845, governor from 1857-1859, and served sa a captain during the civil war. Teh uniform looks to date to the 1840's period while dyer was adj. There is also a storage bag with the grouping that has a paper tag stating suit worn by grandfather dyer when he was presented at court of louis phillippe. However, although the pants, vest and sword hanger show light signs of being worn, the uniform jacket has never been used. It still has linen panels covering the elaborate bullion work to the cuffs, collar, and flaps, and tissue paper still on most of the buttons! hTe jacket full tails in fine blue wool. The cuffs and collar are black velvet with the most elaborate and amazing bullion work, and it's all stone mint! The 16 front buttons are 23mm high gold gilt general staff pattern with superfin/v perfectionne g backmarks. 6 of the front buttons and both back buttons are still covered with tissue. The one cuff not covered with linen has 2 14mm navy buttons, also nicely backmarked but tough to make out completely. The interior lining is a very dense, but fien high quality material. Jacket measurements, shouler to cuff=25 1/2, top of collar to bottom of tails=42, across the shoulders=16 1/2, across the chest pit to pit=18. The pants very fine off white doeskin of the highest quality with 1 1/2 wide gold bullion ribbon running down the outside. Stirrup bottoms to the slightly flared leg.
6 bress button fly wiht additional ones for suspenders i suppose and buckle back. The fly buttons are backmarked superior t n. Pant measurements, waist to bottom=45 1/2, inseam=33, waist approx=31. The vest high quality off white doeskin front, fine linen back with buckle and drawstring. 3 exterior front pockets, 12 high gold gilt (maybe even solid gold) front buttons with flat steel keepers.
Back of collar to waist=20, across the chest ipt to pit=17. The sword hanger again high quality off white doeskin front and back with t cut to accetp what would be a narrow militia or court sword.
Adjustable woven linen strap nearyl 1 3/4 wide with sliding buckle adjustment. Finished hanger measures 14, one small aer of moth nips as visible in the pics. Lastly is some form of storage bag with paper not attached, string tie closures. Overall a spectacular grouping, and in my opinion, as the jacket is unworn, it's likely the young rhode island adjudant general elisha dyer, had occassion to be presented at the court of louis phillippe circa 1840-1845 and probably had this and other jackets talior made in france while on his trip, never having worn this example.
