Kepis Gray And Blue Original Civil War Era Let me start by saying that i know very little about them, except that i got them at a civil war show in richmond va in 1977. I will describe each separately to the best fo my ability. The blue kepi has the gar and wreath of the grand army of the republic (a veterans organization) and the number 36 pinned to the front.
The bill and chin strap are still intact. The side buttons also have gar on them. The blue material has some mildew spots and a 2 inch tear at the left rear. The brown liner is in good condition. There appears to be some minor hand stitched repairs done at some time. The gray kepi is in good condition on the otu side. There is a 1 inch band of black around the bottom. The black bill has surface age cracking. The chin strap is intact with a brass buckle on the right side. The person i got it from said he had replaced the side buttons with reproduction south carolina buttons. The black liner has come unstitched most of the way around. There is a small hole in the material at the bottom of the black band on the left side(smaller than a dime). Some hnad stitched repairs have been done at some time.
There is a maker's mark on the inner side of the crown baker and mckinny military goods 141 grand st new york. My research hsa shown that this company went out of business in 1876. If you have any questions, please sak and i will try my best to answer.
