Early Pennsylvania Militia Tailcoat Pre 1863

Early Pennsylvania Militia Tailcoat Pre 1863

This is an early pennsylvnaia militia tailcoat. It was found when a farm house in bucks county (edgely), pa was cleared out. It is ni overall very good condition with only a bit of moth damage, the most notable in the left chest area. The top collar button is missing. I have had various opinions about the age of the tunic. Suggested that ti is of pre 1863 tailoring. This was based on the button arrangement and style (curved to support a belt), the button maker mark (horstmann bros & co, phila, all matching), the style of tail (short square cut without rat-tails), the amount of hand sewing and the style of trim. I'll leave the final dteermination up to others. The coat is named although i have never been able to discern all fo the inscription so more research is necessary. It seesm that the button back mark is somewhat rare. I have noted taht individual examples appear on the web at prices ranging to $225.

After years of collecting them this is my last coatee. I have set only a modest reserve.
