19th c coldstream guards tunic, trousers & gaitors. Sir jr gladstone, 3rd baronet.

Very nice condition red lightweight coldstream guards tunic and trousers. 2 side pockets, 1 breast pocket and a further 2 smaller breast pockets as pictured. Trousers are good with no damage and red stripe to the sides named to jr gladstone. No makers mraks to either.

This lot includes a pair of leather gaitors stamped size 3. Although not marked, this outfit dates back to around the time of the sudan conflict circa 1885 or shortly after. Includes 2 medal ribbons for. The egypt medal & the khedives star. Approx sizes are as follows.

Shoulder to shoulder across back 52cm. Top of collar to bottom of jakcet 85cm. Length when laid flat 121cm. This collection of uniform came from the gladstone's former home. Many of the items found themselves into christies of london in a high profile sale valued at over â£1m.

Sir john robert gladstone (26 april 1852 â 25 june 1926) was the son of sir thomas gladstone, an older brother of the liberal prime minister william ewart gladstone, and louisa fellowes. He attended the state funeral of ihs uncle, w e gladstone, in 1898. Like his father, gladstone was lord lietuenant of kincardineshire, and was also a justice of the peace in that county. He was a captain in the 1st battalion, the coldstream guards. eH succeeded his father as baronet on 20 march 1889. Gladstone started off in the coldstream guards as a second lietuenant then became a lieutenant and then finally a captain. He was also a brigadier in the royal company fo archers. John served in the battle of. John robert gladstone died on 25 june 1926 aged 74. He never married, so the title passed to his cousin, john evelyn gladstone.
